Janet Killer


1969: Art/Geography teacher, Proserpine SHS. Developed a passion for squash. Active in community arts, visual and performing.

1972: Married cane/cattle farmer. Continued teaching, playing squash and began an Arts degree with UQ. A busy farm life, looking after cattle, weaning calves etc eventually took precedence over study.

December 1977: Separated from cane/cattle farmer. Continued teaching. Undertook flying lessons for the next 12 months and played squash.

December 1978: England and Europe for six months. Highlights? Skiing in the Italian Alps, the concerts, the architecture, galleries.

December 1979: Received a transfer to Ipswich.

1980-June 1984: Art/English teacher, Bremer SHS. Began an Ed. degree majoring in Social Sciences. Committee member of the Ipswich Regional Art Gallery. Played squash.

1984: Education scholarship to study Grad. Dip. Teacher Librarianship Studies, full-time component.

1985-1986: Teacher Librarian/Geography teacher at the new Laidley SHS. Re-commenced degree studies. Developed an interest in computing and library automation.

1987-August 1988: Teacher Librarian/Geography teacher, Inala SHS. Completed degree.
August-December 1988: Acting Head of Department, Resources, Bremer SHS. December 1988: As transfers into Brisbane were very difficult to obtain, moved myself into Brisbane to live.

1989: Six months long service leave to complete Part B, Teacher-Librarianship Studies. Took a further six months Special Leave and did Supply teaching, played squash.

Jan.1990-June 1990: Relieving position as Teacher Librarian/Geography teacher at Ferny Grove SHS.

June 1990-April 1991: Secondment as Resource Officer, Cultural and Gender Equity Unit, Education Queensland.

May 1991-November 1991: Further secondment to Bureau of Ethnic Affairs to assist with the development of a cross-cultural training unit for State schools and Government departments.
November 1991-June 1992: Change of State Government: Back to Bremer SHS as Teacher Librarian/ English teacher, traveling daily from the Eastern suburbs.

June 1992-April 1997: LOTE Officer, Telelearning (transmission of languages lessons to clusters of Primary schools across Queensland) and Ethnic Language Schools, Languages and Cultures Unit, writing and implementing policy, writing speeches, briefings, traveling the State etc. Further developed a strong interest in politics, which continues today.

April 1997: After yet another State election, which required, yet again, returning to a school and re-applying for one’s job, decided to remain as Teacher Librarian/ IT Manager at Kedron SHS; happily now, solely as Teacher Librarian.

I met accountant Laurie in 1997 and settled in Carindale, Brisbane. He has three sons (two of whom live interstate) and four grandsons, which is nice, as I unfortunately left it too late to have children of my own.
