I have lived in the greater Bundaberg area all my life. I married Margaret Biedermann in 1970. We had no children. Margaret passed away in early 2019. I worked for the English Scottish and Australian Bank, Wyper Brother Limited, Bundaberg Sugar Ltd, Austoft Industries Limited and CQUniversity Australia, respectively. I have travelled extensively during my working life, visiting most countries that produce sugar cane as Director of Finance and then Managing Director of Austoft Industries Ltd. In 1995, I set up a joint venture in Brazil to manufacture sugar cane harvesting equipment. It is now part of Case IH. In 1996, I needed a change and became a grazier full-time on a 8,000 acre property (Crescent Valley) midway between Gin Gin and Mt. Perry. I really enjoyed the lifestyle working with horses, dogs and cattle and feeling attached to the land. Too many dry seasons, however, took the shine off the industry, encouraging me to sell up and go back to university to follow my life-long passion for history. After gaining a PhD from UQ I had hopes of gaining a lectureship in history at the Bundaberg campus of CQUniversity. Unfortunately, there were no history jobs available, so I settled for a position teaching accountancy. At least I was able to fulfil my ambition to teach at tertiary level. I retired in July 2021 after a full and varied life. I am now content to occupy my time reading, staying fit and smelling the roses.
