Sylvia Woods/ Pitt

Sylvia's Dancing Lady (Oncidium)

Sylvia Woods married just 18 months after finishing high school in 1966, and became an Air Force wife, living mainly in Canberra for 6 years, and producing one son, Chad, who is now 31 years old.

This marriage ended in 1977, and as a single parent I moved to Melbourne to start a new life.

In Canberra I worked as a laboratory technician at Woden Valley Hospital in the Pathology department, mainly in the Cytology and Cytogenetic departments. As this work interested me, I decided to get a degree in medical science, majoring in microbiology and cytogenetics. For 8 years, I worked full time in cytogenetics at the Royal Women’s Hospital, studied part time, and raised my son on my own.

In 1985 I was asked by Queensland Medical Labs. to set up a prenatal cytogenetics laboratory in Brisbane, so I moved back to Qld. In 1987 I met and married my present husband, David Pitt, the best move I ever made.

1989 saw me leave the work force after contracting a viral illness that left me bedridden for 3 years. After only being able to work 2 days a week for 11 years, I finally gave up the struggle and retired in 2002.

I now handle life slowly, enjoying my garden, my beautiful orchids, and the wildlife that I share it with, particularly the hundreds of frogs who call it home.

My husband is also retired, so we have time to step off life’s treadmill and to smell the roses.
