Introduction

This presentation investigates ways in which the roles of intermediaries are being transformed by technological change, and how executives can guide their organisations so as to grasp the opportunities and avoid the pitfalls.

Underlying mechanisms are first reviewed, including markets, and IT&T systems that extend beyond the boundaries of individual organisations. Procurement is examined, and players and their roles identified. Distribution is examined by means of a case study of the turbulent world of electronic publishing. An analysis is provided of the manner in which intermediaries are changing.
