Version 2.1 of December 1995
This page is intended to assist IS academics and graduate students in doing the sorts of things that they do.
You are invited to contribute to the enhancement of this tool by sending e-mail to Roger Clarke. The usage statistics show that I've had a lot more browsers than helpers - if you're an IS researcher and this isn't much use to you, (a) please tell me so, and (b) please tell me why!!!! (If you'd like to provide anonymous comments, feel free to use an anonymous remailer!).
Warning: Some of the information in this document is specific to the A.N.U., and some of it to Australia. Much of it, however, is relevant to any I.S. researcher.
This Workbench contains the following sections:
Closely associated with this Workbench is my page called 'Plugging In' - Electronic Communications Resources for IS Academics, which offers:
If you wish to search for articles using a keyword, use the entry points in sections 'Online Databases', 'Library Online Catalogues' and 'Searching the Internet' to discover references
If you know the specific publication you want, use the section 'Library Online Catalogues', or find out more about the journals concerned.
As external pages are extensively used, you have to use the 'Back' button to go back to the page you came from. If you have problems with Telnet, try to launch Telnet before starting Netscape.
Note that this page was developed primarily for staff and graduate students at the A.N.U. I would expect broadly similar approaches to be appropriate in other institutions, but you may need to refine the details!
ABI-INFORM is available via FIRSTSEARCH, but has a different authorisation number and password to the other FirstSearch databases. For further information see also ELISA. Many articles found with ABI/INFORM are available on BPO. Connect to ABI-Inform or FirstSearch
Uncover stores 17,000 journals of all disciplines. UNCOVER REVEAL is a free alert service. You can select journal titles, and every time a new issue of these selected titles are added to the database, an e-mail will be sent to you with the the table of contents of the new issue. Articles can be ordered and received by fax. If you want to order articles, use the connection via the ANU Library (requires a login and a password from the A.N.U. library), you will get a discount of US$2.00 for each article ordered. Now you may connect to UNCOVER directly or find out more Information about Uncover. For further information see also ELISA.
Current Contents provides access to articles of more than 3800 international journals. As 'current' suggests, only articles from the last two years are available. The authorisation number and password can be obtained at any Readers Advisers' desk. See also ELISA for more information. Connect to CURRENT CONTENTS Note: ^E on the menu means to strike 'E' while holding down the control key.
Reuters provides access to articles of more than 2000 international publications (from the last five years). The service is available in Chifley Library (from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m.) and in Menzies Library (from 2 p.m. to 5 p.m.). An introductory tutorial how to use Reuters is offered in the Menzies Library by Ruth Booth. In the 40 min of the tutorial you will learn the various search options and how to print or download articles. For more information on Reuters see also the Library Information.

Last Amended: 23 December 1995
This material was developed by Roger Clarke during 1995, with significant support from graduate students (many thanks to Martin Plank and Geoffrey Chow!). The page has been designed for Netscape 1.x, in a Mac environment; but it ought to be entirely workable with any web-browser on any kind of workstation. If not, please tell me so!
I intend that this document be incorporated as a segment of the collaborative international community, ISWorld Net, but so far we haven't quite worked out where it fits, as it is conceived somewhat differently, and cuts across many 'slices of the salami' that make up that network.
These community service pages are a joint offering of the Australian National University (which provides the infrastructure), and Roger Clarke (who provides the content). |
